All indicators up at Ballarat

Lamb numbers jumped to 39,194 penned. Quality of the lambs improved over the yarding with very nice runs of heavy export and trade weight lambs presented in exceptional condition. All the usual buyers were present, the market opened firm on last week’s level’s and gained intensity over the really neat well finished lambs and light store lambs, although the buyers were selective over the secondary types. Towards the end of the market sales softened as buyers filled orders and sat back off the rail, sales bounced from around 620c/kg to the low 700c/kg cwt. Light store lambs gained $4, light and medium trade sold to $3 better and heavy trade gained $3 to $5/head. Heavy export lamb were in demanded with more competition this week selling to a top of $280 and gaining $10 to $15/head.

Lambs back to the paddock sold from $17 to $126 and lambs to feed on made from $128 to $148/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg to suit MK orders sold from $88 to $134/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $123 to $154, lambs 22 to 26kg sold $144 to $183/head to have an average range of 640c to 685c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $180 to $224 and over 30kg sold from $213 to $280/head with an average range of 670c to 695c/kg cwt. Hoggets sold from $50 to $151/head for the crossbreds and Merino’s sold from $38 to $110/head.

Mutton numbers increased to 15,894, quality improved across all weights and grades. The market opened much stronger then soften to become erratic throughout the rest of the sale. Merino wethers sold from $17 to $128, gaining $7 to $15/head dearer. Merino Ewes made from $8 to $100, selling firm to $8 better and the heavy crossbred mutton made from $53 to $110, selling firm to $6/head dearer. Most mutton average from 275c to 305c/kg cwt.
