Back to the books - I listened to a podcast the other day that I reckon every Farmer should listen to. It was on David Cornish's AgTalk Podcast, and it featured the very impressive John Francis, a consultant at Agrista. You can listen to the podcast here

It's a livestock-focused interview, but there are takeaways for all Farmers. With some cracking years for the Sheep and Cattle guys, John makes a good point of how we can become complacent and a little bit lazy when things are good, and then when the downturn came, it slapped us in the face.

He suggests it's high time to get back into the office and focus on the numbers again and to work out the cost of production to make sure you keep your head above water in this high-cost environment.

John puts a big emphasis on systems, and he says that all of his top-performing clients have excellent systems. My observation is that the mathmatically minded Farmers are the best a working out what systems that work for them. That's the beauty of Ag; there are so many ways to do things, and the system that works in Gilgandra, NSW, might not work in Freeling in SA. But if you have developed a pretty good system (none are perfect) that works on your Farm, you are more than halfway there. Do you reckon you have a pretty good Farming system?
