Be like themThis time last week, I went to a little place in the West of Victoria called Goroke. They had an event at the newly minted Footy Clubrooms, which was well attended by about 50 locals.

I got around and had a chat with most people in the room, and one of the takeaways was that it’s been a long time since I have come across a bunch of locals who are so community-focused.

One Farmer told me when someone from a long way away asks where he’s from he always says Goroke, not near Horsham or close to the Vic/SA border. It’s unapologetically Goroke, and they can easily look it up on Google Maps.

I think the key to a better community is having a multitude of leaders. One Farming family put on the event I was at, and two other locals led the building of the new clubrooms. They are always looking for ways to improve. A good example of that is when people would ask about staying in town, but there was no accommodation, so some enterprising locals have started putting up a couple of portables where passers-by can stay. If you want to improve your local community, you could do a lot worse than emulate Goroke. Be like them. What excites you about the community you live in? How do you rate your community?
