The National Mutton indicator finished the financial year on average 419c/kg carcass weight, up 30 percent on last year and over 40 percent on the five-year average.
The Mutton price has retreated of late but is still in a strong position above 400c/kg.
The overall strong price has been because sheep breeders have retained more Ewes in a market that is very tight.
The fall in prices can be attributed to the dry weather and leaner rain outlook forcing restockers to get the crystal ball out and try and get a hand on what pasture might be ahead of them. If the forecast ahead was better, then price would still be in record territory
