Bit of a mixed bag at Ballarat

Lamb numbers increased to 19, 981 after last week’s very strong market. Heavy lambs off supplementary feed presented in excellent condition, quality slipped over the trade and light weight categories throughout the yarding. Not all the usual buyers were present and fewer store buyers were on the rail in a market that had mixed results. Light store and trade lambs under 20kg cwt sold to $5 either side of firm, medium and heavy trade made from $3 to $8 better, the market bounced with dearer sales for the better quality lambs and the plainer secondary types selling to $10/head cheaper in places. Heavy exports were in high demand again this week selling to a top of $313, selling from $10 to $15/head dearer.

Lambs back to the paddock sold from $27 to $139 and lambs to feed on made from $130 to $175/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg sold from $66 to $139/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $119 to $189, lambs 22 to 26kg sold $172 to $245/head to have a wide range from 755c to 875c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $229 to $287 and over 30kg sold from $267 to $313/head with an average range of 840c to 890c/kg cwt. Hoggets made from $86 to $230 gaining $10/head for the crossbreds and Merino’s sold from $39 to $149/head for the Merino’s.

Mutton numbers decreased to 6,618. Quality was patchy with a range from plain to very good and not all the usual buyers on the rail. The market opened softer but gained momentum over the well presented Merion wethers with good skin length. Merino wethers sold from $28 to $89 for the light weights, slipping $5 and the medium and heavy weights sold from $95 to $168, selling firm to $5/head dearer in places. Merino Ewes made from $38 to $84 for the lighter weights and $72 to $140 for the heavy weights, selling from $10 to $15/head Cheaper, with Merino mutton averaging 420c to 490c/kg for the better quality. Heavy crossbred mutton made from $106 to $150, and the light weights made from $14 to $115, selling $10 to $20/head softer.
