Yarding - 16,500 (-3500).
Lambs - 12,000 (-3800).
Sheep - 4500 (+1300).
A smaller yarding of lambs after the wet weather. Buyer competition was erratic, with not all processors operating fully and tending to step in and out of the market. Prices were very mixed and driven by both lamb weight and quality. All the heavy lamb categories recorded cheaper price results, while any genuine domestic lambs under 24kg cwt and in fresh condition were firm to dearer. Buyers did target any of the better bred lines of lambs in shorter-skins, while odd woolly and winter clean-up lots were often discounted. This caused price estimates in carcase terms to widen over many lamb categories, an example being the big export lambs which were recorded at 670c to 780c/kg cwt.
The heaviest crossbred lambs sold from $225 to a top of $261/head, with an average run estimated at costing processors around 750c/kg cwt. The heavy 26 to 30kg lambs made from $215 to $238/head, and again there was a wide carcass price spread based around quality and size. The sale showed better momentum and demand over the more nicely weighted trade lambs. The main run of 24 to 26kg cwt crossbreds averaged $215 at around 840c/kg, while the next size down at 22 to 24kg averaged $208/head at 860c/kg cwt. Prices were dearer for any fresh conditioned lambs from 20 to 23kg, with these still making from $185 to $210/head at up to 940c/kg in places. Heavy Merino lambs sold to $240, with most of the better finished types from $185 to $220/head at around 730c to 750c/kg cwt. Secondary and plain lambs lacking finish mostly made from $130 to $170/head.
A modest lift in sheep numbers to 4,500 head, although mutton supplies remain low for Bendigo. Heavy ewes were cheaper while the feature lines of Merino wethers were firm. Big crossbred ewes showing a lot of weight and condition from $180 to $236; heavy Merino wethers made from $192 to $234/head to be trending at 650c/kg cwt.
