Clear direction - Our Ag industry bodies cop it a fair bit, and some of it’s warranted because they are using Farmer levies (and government funds) to invest in that particular industry to try and make it better.

The criticism usually comes when the industry prices are in the doldrums (Wool) or when they head down a tangent that tries to appease those outside the industry more than inside (MLAs carbon neutral by 2030).

When the direction is clear and relevant, that’s when the industry gets behind a cause, and the noise coming out of MLA under new leader Michael Crowley sounds positive, at least to me.

What he and his team are focused on is value-based marketing. This is how Micheal described it:Value-based marketing involves shifting from Livestock pricing systems based on weight and average value across consignments to payments that reflect meat quality and yield of high-value cuts within each carcass”. Read the full article here. Breeding Livestock for particular traits, specs, and markets is all about balance, but it’s a fascinating direction that I am sure will have its supporters and critics.
