Dearer market again at Ballarat Sheep and Lambs

Sheep - 4233 (-673).
Lamb supply eased to 11,484 head at Ballarat this week. Quality varied from average to good, with a mix of all weights yarded. The usual buying group attended and operated in a primarily dearer market, with the better-covered lambs $2 to $10/head dearer. Heavy lambs sold to $340/head, with quality trade weight lambs at times making approximately 1,000c/kg cwt. Restockers and feeders paid from $153 to $236, with lighter lots receiving from $44 to $136/head.

Light weight 2 score lambs weighing 12-18kg sold from $100 to $198/head to average 890c/kg. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs weighing 18-22kg made from $160 to $218/head to average 910c/kg. Medium trade weight 3 and 4 score lambs weighing 22-24kg sold from $198 to$247/head, varying from 845c to 1,015c to average 955c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 to 4 score trade weight lambs weighing 24-26kg sold from $204 to$258/head to average close to 965c/kg cwt. Export lambs weighing 26-30kg sold from $243 to $286/head to average 940c/kg cwt. Extra heavy export lambs 30kg plus sold from $290 to $340/head. Hoggets made from $126 to $170 for crossbreds and Merinos made to$126/head.

Sheep numbers were also back this week at 4,233, with all weights yarded. Not all the major processors attended or operated. Sheep sold to similar competition, with heavy sheep easing a few dollars in places. Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $75 to $122 to average550c/kg, with very light 1 scores making from $10 to $86/head. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $93 to $168/head, or from490c to 700c, with Merino mutton averaging close to 590c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $150 to $176, as heavy Merino wethers made from $158 to $177, while medium weights received from $115 to $134/head, the Merino sheep averaging from 595c to 630c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 to 4 score crossbred sheep sold from $136 to $250/head to average approximately 600c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $20 to $176/head
