Entertainment factorThose modern-day Sheep and Cattle Auto Drafters have built-in counters where it records how many went through the system. I am guessing if you sent 30 to the left, 45 to the right and 300 straight ahead, it would tally them up automatically.

It got me thinking about how counting Sheep is a real skill. I was never great at it and never confident I was ever right. Some are great at it, some count in 2's, some 3's, some 5's and so on.

Our old legendary Agent, the late Don Murphy, was probably the worst I have ever seen. I remember helping him out as a teenager at the local Marnoo Sheep Sale when they had them, and we had to run through them 3 or 4 times because he lost count. On the last go, he would say he got them a spot on that time. He would sorta convince himself that he got them exactly right until the Truckie would count them and get a different number.

When I quizzed my brother Ben about the Auto Drafter counting the Sheep, I said to him they count much more accurately than Don Murphy right, to which he replied, "More accurate, yes, but Don way more entertaining". That he was. Are you good at counting Sheep, and if so, what multiples do you count in? Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
