Both lamb and sheep numbers reduced despite the previous sale cancelled due to Easter. Well finished processor lambs with good fat cover were again limited. The yarding did contain a reasonable number of Merino lambs, as well as some bigger lines of Dorpers off feed. Bidding was keener from the regular roll call of buyers, with heavy lambs weighing over 24kg cwt recording the best gains. Export lambs were $10 to $30 dearer than a fortnight ago, reaching a top of $246/head. Price improvements over the general run of trade weight lambs were more modest at $5 to $12/head, with quality an influencing factor. Processor demand for light export or MK lambs was strong and put a dearer base in the market for any decent lines of stock under 18kg cwt.

Big lambs in excess of 32kg cwt reached $246, but the strongest competition was on the 26-30kg cwt lambs that benefitted from both export and domestic orders to make from $190 to $236/head. Good quality trade weight lambs generally sold from $165 to $185/head. On a carcase basis these lambs were recording estimated averages from 700c to 750c/kg cwt. The best of the Merino lambs, off supplementary feed and in higher value skins, also trended above 700c/kg cwt to reach $190/head. Buyers remained selective on plainer lambs, or small pen lots of a few head, and these lambs remained under 700c/kg cwt. Most of the light weight lambs sold from $115 to $140/head to record some of the dearest carcase price estimates of the sale.

Quantity and quality declined in the sheep run, with just 5,000 head yarded. Competition was animated, particularly on heavy mutton, as southern and northern processors clashed. Price gains of $10 to $30/head were common in an erratic sale. Extra heavy crossbred ewes made from $185 to $215 and Merino wethers reached $210/head. The better quality sheep were costing from 520c to 600c/kg cwt.
