Former rugby league star turned Orange winemaker Peter Mortimer is out to tackle global markets after taking part in a successful trade mission to India with the NSW Government.
Minister for Trade and Industry, Niall Blair said Peter, who played wing and centre for the Canterbury Bulldogs over a decade, is now blossoming on the vine.
“Peter was a star on the footy field for the Bulldogs and has maintained his dogged spirit to successfully convert into the world of professional wine making,” Mr Blair said.
“Peter joined a recent NSW Government-led trade mission to India where we took a delegation of some of our state’s best food and beverage companies on a week-long business safari to help develop export opportunities for their world class produce.
“I’m pleased to say Peter kicked a goal during his trip and is now following up to lock in export plans for his wines to the Indian sub-continent.”
Peter Mortimer said the trip to India provided first class introductions that will allow him to pursue significant export opportunities.
“The trade mission introduced us to leading sommeliers and hotel chain owners and the reception we got in India was extremely enthusiastic and positive.

“I had a number of different people indicate they wanted to progress to the next level in helping us import our wine and I’m currently in the process of considering offers and appointing an importer and distributor.
“The Indian wine market is very new and while only about 10 per cent of the population drinks wine at the moment the country, like China, is moving to become more westernised and is starting to develop a taste so there is huge potential.”
Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless said the region is home to many world-class businesses that have great potential in global markets.
“NSW has a reputation for producing some of the world’s best wines and the ever-growing middle class in India offers NSW producers enormous export potential.”
