Gains gains and more gains at Ballarat

Lamb numbers are increasing week on week, agents penned just over 18,300, with 90% of the yarding were new season lambs. Quality improved with more freshness and shape throughout the new season lambs, although not a lot of heavy weights were on offer. More buyers were on the rail and extra store competition in a stronger market across the yarding. Light and medium trade sold from $7 to $15/head dearer. Heavy trades were in demand selling $12 to $15 stronger and more in places for the rally neat lambs with excellent shape and cover.

Heavy export lambs were limited and sold to a top of $271 to be $10/head dearer to a week ago. Store lambs gained $8 to $17/head. New season Lamb back to the paddock made from $27 to $150 and $152 to $187/head for lambs to feed on. New season Light trade lambs under 18kg to suit MK orders sold from $116 to $151/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $151 to $200, 22 to 26kg sold $195 to $255/head, with a wide range from 760c to 895c with sales reaching 950c/kg cwt.

Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $245 to $271/head, with a range of 880c to 950c/kg cwt. Old lambs are now very limited and quality has dropped away, mostly clean up lots offered. Selling from $65 to $125 for the lighter weights and $145 to 232/head for the heavy weights. Hoggets sold from $56 to $200 for the crossbreds and $45 to $66/head for the Merino’s.

Mutton numbers remained similar with 12,300 penned, quality improved, the market opened firm on last week and gained momentum to end dearer. Merino wethers selling from $48 to $113, selling $7 to $15/head stronger. Light weight Merino ewes made from $32 to $90 and the heavier weights made from $74 to $95, gaining to $10/head, to average from 300c to 320c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred mutton made from $70 to $124, to be $10 to $20 dearer and the lighter weights made from $15 to $76 selling $10/head stronger.
