Good old gut feel - I love the notion of making decisions on gut feel. And I think the Farming industry uses it more than any other industry except for, say, the gambling industry.

In Farming, it's about getting a higher percentage of things right as opposed to wrong. And there are plenty of areas where we can use gut feel; it could be selling what we produce, buying what we need, or it could be around the timing of things, or it could be around people with whom we work, deal and associate with.

Rarely in Ag do we have all the data we need in order to make decisions, as there are too many other variables we need to consider anyway.

Gut feel can be a learnt trait, and you could build a system by asking a series of questions around the decision, kinda like the way the Holistic Management guys do.

They have a series of rigid questions they ask when making a decision. By asking questions that you frame and by asking them in a consistent manner, you are forming an opinion. This means you are nearly ready to make a decision. And after you have made that decision, you still don't know if it's going to be the right one or not. And that's totally fine. I hope that wasn't too heavy. Are you a user of gut feel when you make a decision? Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
