As Australia heads to the polls in May, GrainGrowers has outlined key priorities for the grains sector that will help enable the industry to continue to thrive, underpinning the social fabric of regional communities and the broader Australia economy. Grains are the foremost commodity for Australian agriculture, contributing around $14 billion to the Australian economy at the farm production level each year and an additional $12 billion in export earnings.

David McKeon, GrainGrowers CEO said “Our growers are proud to produce food and beverages for the world. Our cereals, oilseeds and legumes are also in high demand for livestock feeds, pharmaceuticals, biofuels and a range of other uses. To continue our growth and sustainability as a sector, we are asking all parties and candidates to help us get the right policy settings in place.”

GrainGrowers is seeking support for seven key priority areas:
1. Better telecommunications
2. Improved freight efficiency
3. Improved research, innovation and access to technology
4. Improved access for agricultural machinery on roads
5. Improved trade and market access
6. Enhanced climate resilience and risk management
7. Improved information transparency and competition

Growers need to find ways to better manage risk in an increasingly variable climate, to more efficiently get grain to market and to have better access to global markets. The grains sector needs innovation and research to transform farming system. There needs to be the infrastructure and connectivity to drive success across regional Australia. There is a clear need to ensure all parts of the supply chain are globally competitive.

Government has a key role to place in the future success of the grains sector, to ensure the policy settings are appropriate and the strategic investments are made which allow the grains sector to contribute more to the Australian economy.

“We are looking forward to engaging with all parties and candidates contesting the 2019 Federal Election and securing their commitment to these critical areas for our growers.” McKeon said.
