Have you pivoted? - Some call it a sliding doors moment, others call it pivoting, whatever the case it happens to all of us at some point in time. Sometimes, on many different occasions.

 

One or two of you might have heard our Farm Tender pivot story. Before we were a two-sided marketplace business, we were a buying service, which was also a two-sided marketplace of sorts, just with a different model.

So how it worked was a Farmer would list that they wanted to buy, say, 200 tonnes of MAP Fertiliser. Once listed, we would get suppliers to make quotes, and the Farmer would pick the best quote. Usually the lowest price. But after a supplier lost 5 quotes in a row, they would say stuff this and give up on it. So, that model never really took off.

 

I remember we were promoting our business at one of the many Field Days we went to, and one of our older members came up and said: "Why can't I sell stuff on your website?" I thought about it for a few seconds and said hmm, that sounds like a good idea. So, within a month, we had our website switched around so people could sell stuff. Our model hasn't changed since that time, 12 years ago. That was our pivot. What has yours been? Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
