Irrigators are Irrigating - A couple of Irrigation Farmers I was speaking to over the last couple of days are flat-out Irrigating. That's not a surprise. One Farmer, North of the Murray said there are that many Farmers Irrigating, no wonder we have a shortage of diesel. The other Farmer is on the SA/Vic border, and all his are going flat out, too.
That leads me to a story about the late high-flying businessman John "Jack" Elliott, who owned a Rice-growing property on the Edwards River, just East of Moulamein. Legend has it that when Big Jack issued the manager to start the Irrigation Pumps, there was so much water coming out that the Edwards used to run backwards. He was always a law unto himself. Remember, after they banned smoking at the MCG, Elliott took it upon himself to light up just to stir the establishment.
We, as a nation, and the Farmers that now benefit from Irrigation should be very grateful to our forefathers who had the initiative to build such infrastructure.
And this is the Irrigator's time to shine, a drying national Crop, good Crop commodity prices, lowish Water prices (no thanks to buy backs) and full Dams. Sometimes, the planets line up for Irrigators, and this is it. Water away guys. Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
