Lamb and Sheep prices dearer at Ballarat

Lamb numbers lifted by approximately 4,500 head to 26,804 this week at Ballarat. Quality varied from average to good, with a mix of all weights and grades on offer. The usual buying group attended and operated keenly in a firm to dearer lamb market. Light lambs sold from $2 to $4 dearer, the trade weight lambs sold from $2 to $6 stronger and the heavy and extra heavy lambs improved by $2 to $15/head up on last week levels. Extra heavy lambs reached a top of $240, with the 22-24kg trade weights making from $155 to $175/head and averaging close to 700c/kg cwt. Lighter lambs suiting processors and restockers sold stronger, with processors paying mainly from $96 to $137/head. Feeders and restockers were active, paying from $90 to $155 for their replacements, with lighter smaller lots receiving from $18 to $78/head. They purchased young first cross ewes, joined to lamb May 2019, from $178 to $226/head.

Light weight 2 score lambs 12-18kg, sold from $96 to $137/head. Light trade weight 2 and 3 score lambs 18-22kg, sold from $136 to $160/head and averaged close to 710c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight 3 and 4 score lambs 22-24 kg, sold from $155 to $175/head, or from 675c to 720c to average close to 700c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 and 4 score trade weight lambs 24-26 kg, sold from $172 to $186/head at close to 685c/kg cwt. Export weight lambs sold from $184 to $210, with the extra heavy export lambs making from $212 to $240/head. Merino lambs over 18kg sold from $135 to $138, with the lighter drafts making from $107 to $132/head, averaging approximately from 670c to 680c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred hoggets sold from $109 to $185, with the Merino hoggets making from $108 to $140/head.
There were 15,792 sheep yarded, up by 6,942 on last week. Stronger prices and the ongoing dry conditions are seeing large numbers come forward. There was a good mix of all weights and grades, but with plenty of lighter sheep suiting processors. Prices lifted from $3 to $10/head for the light and medium weight sheep, and took a further jump on the heavy sheep following on from last week’s strong returns. Heavy sheep at times were $20 to $25/head dearer.

Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $53 to $106 and averaged close to 330c/kg cwt, with very light sheep making from $5 to $68/head. Medium weight sheep sold from $82 to $153/head, or from 400c to 580c, with the Merino mutton averaging close to 515c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold to $150, the heavy Merino wethers made from $132 to $185, with the medium weights receiving from $94 to $160/head. The heavy Merino sheep averaged from 540c to 570c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred ewes sold from $106 to $210/head and averaged close to 500c/kg cwt. Crossbred wethers reached $183, and rams sold from $24 to $117/head.
