Lamb Market down $2-$8 at Ballarat this week

Yarding - 32,294 (+2052) .
Lambs - 24,294 (+4852).
Sheep - 7800 (-2800).

Ballarat Agents yarded a larger number of lambs following the long weekend and the continuing hot weather, with 24,294 head penned. Quality varied from average to good, with most agents opening with several pens of well presented heavy shorn lambs, that reached $225/head. Most of the usual buying group attended, but not all operated fully, with the market going to an easier trend being $2 to $8/head easier. Nicely presented shorn trade weight lambs sold close to firm, making to $173/head or approximately 740c/kg cwt. The best of the unshorn lambs reached $163/head. There was not as much restocker interest this week, with feeder and restocker lambs making from $80 to $140, for the shorn lambs, while the unshorn young lambs going to feeders and restockers sold from $84 to $152/head. Restockers also paid from $90 to $110 for Merino wethers and from $86 to $105/head for crossbred ewes.

Shorn light weight 2 score lambs sold from $91.50 to $108/head. Light trade 2 and 3 score shorn lambs made from $115 to $145/head and averaged close to 700c/kg cwt. Trade weight 3 and 4 score shorn lambs sold from $142 to $157, as the heavier weights made from $149 to $173/head or from 630c to 740c, averaging approximately 690c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 and 4 score shorn lambs sold from $165 to $209, as the extra heavy export shorn lambs made from $204 to $225/head, averaging close to 630c/kg cwt. Light trade weight unshorn young lambs sold from $116 to $143/head at approximately 680c/kg cwt. The trade weight unshorn lambs sold from $140 to $163 and the heavy young lambs made to $163/head. Heavy crossbred hoggets sold from $90 to $132, with Merinos reaching $108/head.

Sheep numbers were back at 7,800, with all weights and grades on offer, including some very good runs of Merino ewes and wethers. Ewes sold to $140 and heavy Merino wethers made to $132/head. Not all the usual buyers were active, but the sheep market did show improvement, being primarily from $2 to $5/head stronger on majority of the sheep.

Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $48 to $89 and averaged close to 360c/kg cwt, with very light sheep making from $10 to $52/head. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $62 to $112/head or from 310c to 420c, with the Merino mutton averaging approximately 405c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $100 to $140, as heavy Merino wethers sold from $105 to $132 and medium weights made from $91 to $111/head. The heavy Merino sheep averaged from 400c to 435c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred sheep sold from $82 to $129/head to average approximately 335c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $7 to $50/head
