Lamb numbers increased and so did prices at Ballarat

Lamb supply jumped this week to 30,258 yarded, the quality was better and ranged from good to excellent. Most of the usual buying group and extra processors attended, not all were active in a market that started firm to gain momentum halfway through to end firm to $11/head dearer in places. Light trade lambs sold firm to $11 better, medium trade was firm to $6 dearer and heavy trade sold to $5 stronger, while heavy export lambs were to $5/head dearer, with a wide range of 830c to 980c/kg cwt across most categories.

Strong competition from store buyers, putting pressure on the processes for light lambs under 18kg cwt paying $115 to $180 and over 18kg cwt $170 to $230/head to feed on. Light lambs under 18kg cwt to suit MK orders to the trade sold from $122 to $184, firm to $10/head dearer. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $170 to $218 and lambs 22 to 24kg made from $198 to $237/head, with an average range of 880c to 915c/kg cwt. Heavy lambs 24 to 26kg sold from $223 to $257, with Limited numbers offered in the heavy export lambs, 26 to 30kg made from $250 to $285/head with and average range of 900c to 910c/kg cwt.

Sheep numbers decreased this week to 5,728 yarded, the quality ranged from plain to very good with most of the usual buying group present, but not all were active and some watching on as competition was stronger than a week ago. Overall the market was with sales $15 to $30/head dearer across most categories. Heavy Merino wethers made from $184 to $205/head, to average 630c to 650c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $147 to $185 to average 590c to 620c and heavy crossbred mutton made $142 to $224/head, to average 500c to 550c/kg cwt.
