Lamb supply doubles at Ballarat this week

Sheep - 7147 (-2764).
Lamb supply increased to 22,792 head this week at Ballarat, an increase of 11,334 head. Quality covered all weights and grades, with a smaller number of heavy lambs on offer. The usual buying group attended and operated with less urgency in an easier market when compared to last week’s high levels. The good quality trade weight lambs at times sold close to firm, with most lambs easing from $5 to $10/head. Heavy lambs made to $212 and the heavier trade weight lambs sold from $152 to $166/head, to average 680c/kg cwt. Restockers and feeders were active and paid from $90 to $142/head for their replacements. Speciality heavy lamb feeders paid from $180 to $196/head for lambs going onto feed. Approximately 2,000 first cross shorn ewe lambs, spring drop were offered in lines of up to 300 head and they sold to graziers from $154 to $170, and from $121 to $136/head for the lighter drafts. Restockers also paid from $61 to $129/head for Merino ewes spring shorn.

Shorn light weight 2 score lambs sold from $91 to $115/head. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs sold from $118 to $148/head, to average 705c/kg cwt. Trade weight 3 and 4 score lambs sold from $141 to $156, with the heavier drafts selling from $152 to $166/head, to make from 640c to 715c, averaging 680c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 and 4 score lambs sold from $166 to $200/head and averaged 670c/kg cwt. Extra heavy export lambs sold from $198 to $212/head. Trade weight unshorn lambs sold from $144 to $164 and heavy hoggets sold from $100 to $159/head.

There were 7,147 sheep yarded, a decrease on last week’s numbers. Quality covered all weights and grades, with some excellent runs of heavy crossbred and Merino sheep yarded. Not all the usual buying group operated fully, with light and medium sheep easing a few dollars, while the heavy sheep sold close to last week’s levels. Merino wethers sold to keen demand, especially those in a big fleece, to improve from $5 to $10/head on last week. Wethers made to $135, while Merino ewes sold to $151 and crossbred ewes sold to $158/head.
