Lambs firm to dearer, Sheep dearer at Ballarat on Melbourne Cup day

Numbers decreased to 22,635 most likely due to Melbourne cup day, quality was excellent with all the usual buying group attending and operating in a firm to dearer market in places. Strong competition on the over 24kg lambs benefitted major domestic processes. Heavy young lambs sold to $247 and young shorn lambs sold from $180 to $200/head.

Lightweight lambs 12-18kg sold from $98 to $143/head to average 750c/kg cwt. Lambs 18-22kg sold from $143 to $176/head to average750c/kg cwt. Lambs 22-24kg sold from $172 to $198/head, making from 708c to 808c to average 755c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 to 4 score lambs 24-26kg sold from $190 to $214/head to average around 770c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26-30kg sold from $205 to $226.5/head to average 795c/kg cwt and a single pen of heavy export lambs over 30kg sold to $247/head. Hogget's sold from $77 to $195 for crossbred's and Merino's from$106 to $179/head.
Sheep numbers were also down slightly to 8,961 the quality average to very good with plenty of weight on offer over the crossbred and Merino lines. The usual buying group attended and operated in a very strong market to be $5 to $20/head up on last week's levels. Lightweight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $83 to $120/head to average 585c/kg cwt. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $112 to$158/head making from 514c to 670c, with Merino mutton averaging around 630c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $145 to $183averaging 615c/kg, heavy 3 to 5 score crossbred ewes sold from $136 to $217/head to average 545c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino wethers sold from$146 to $190/head. Rams sold from $35 to $140/head
