Market proved erratic at Ballarat

Yarding: 48,462
Lamb numbers increased to 32,057 penned. A large portion of the yarding were plainer secondary types lacking condition. Well finished lambs with good weight and shape and finish were in limited supply and very much sort after. All the usual buying group attended in a market that opened erratic to gain momentum midway through over the really neat trade and heavy export lambs, to end with mixed results.
Light store and trade lambs sold from $6 to $10 softer. Medium trade to $2 to $4 softer however isolated sales were to $10 dearer in places and the plainer secondary types sold to $12 cheaper in places. Heavy trade sold firm to $3 softer, with sales in places to $10 dearer for the well finished lambs in short skins.

Extra heavy export lambs were in limited supply and presented in excellent condition to sell to a top of $290/head to be $4 either side of firm. Lambs back to the paddock made from $38 to $146 and $142 to $155/head to feed on. Light trade lambs under 18kg to suit MK orders sold from $88 to 155/head, averaging 700c to 800c/kg cwt. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $137 to $182/head, 22 to 26kg sold $174 to $224/head, to average 770c to 810c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs over 26kg made from $211 to $290/head, to average of 800c to 820c/kg cwt. Hoggets from $46 to $155 for the Merino’s and $55 to $172/head for the crossbreds.
Mutton numbers increased to 16,405 penned. All the usual buying group were on the rail, but not all were active in a market that opened softer and remained subdued throughout the yarding. Merino wethers made from $47 to $115 for the lighter weights and the heavier weights sold from $98 to $136, slipping $10 to $25/head. Light weight Merino ewes made from $11 to $102, and the heavier weights sold from $88 to $139, selling from $6 to $20/head cheaper. Heavy crossbred mutton made from $82 to $137, to be $6 to $12 cheaper and the lighter weights made from $18 to $85/head.
