Massive drop in numbers at Ballarat Sheep and Lamb Market

Sheep - 6876 (-5224).
Lamb supply decreased to just 9,658 head at Ballarat this week, back by nearly 50%. Quality varied from average to good, but with more, plainer light weight lambs yarded. The regular buying group attended and operated selectively in a dearer market on the quality shorn lambs. Trade weights improved by $5 to $10, the export weights improved from $10 to $20 and the extra heavy weights at times were over $20/head up on last week’s levels. Heavy and extra weight lambs were few in number and made to $237, with the heavier trade weights making from $140 to $169/head and averaging approximately 650c/kg cwt. Restockers were active and paid primarily from $90 to $144/head for their replacements, with most restocker lambs selling dearer. They also paid from $100 to $121/head for unjoined, first cross ewes.
Light weight shorn 2 score lambs sold from $80 to $107/head. Light trade 2 and 3 score shorn lambs sold from $115 to $141/head and averaged approximately 680c/kg cwt. Trade weight 3 and 4 score shorn lambs sold from $134 to $152, with the heavier drafts receiving from $140 to $169/head or from 590c to 700c to average approximately from 650c to 660c/kg cwt. Export weights sold from $163 to $200/head and averaged close to 670c to 680c/kg cwt. The extra heavy weights sold from $190 to $237/head. Unshorn trade weight lambs sold from $136 to $154, with the export weights making from $154 to $172/head, averaging approximately from 610c to 615c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred hoggets sold from $97 to $131, with the Merino hoggets reaching $102/head.

There were 6,876 sheep yarded, also easing on last week’s penning. All weights and grades were on offer, but with more lighter sheep yarded, showing the effects of the season. There was more interest in the sheep run this week, with sheep primarily going to a dearer trend, to be from $5 to $10/head up on last week.
Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $49 to $83 to average 370c/kg cwt, with very light sheep making from $4 to $58/head. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $64 to $115/head or from 310c to 450c, with the Merino mutton averaging close to 415c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino wethers sold from $104 to $117, with the medium weights making from $70 to $112/head, while the Merino wethers averaged from 400c to 425c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred ewes sold from $80 to $127/head and averaged close to 350c/kg cwt. Crossbred wethers made to $130 and rams of all weights sold from $18 to $67/head
