A big lift in lamb supply this week at Ballarat saw, 23,736 head yarded, that's up 12,291 on last week. Quality ranged from average to good, with a mix of all weights penned. The regular buying group attended and operated in a dearer market, with light lambs selling $5 to $10dearer, the medium and heavy trade weight lambs sold to $10 dearer and the heavy and extra heavy lambs sold $10 to $20/head stronger, and more in places. Domestic processors stepped up in the weight to secure quality lambs with limited numbers of quality finished, medium trade weight lambs available. Extra heavy lambs reached $264/head, for a much dearer result. Feeders and restockers were active purchasing lambs from $100 to $159, and they paid $50 to $95/head for lighter smaller lots. Most restocker lambs were dearer.

Light weight 2 score lambs, 12kg to 18kg, sold from $94 to $148/head. Light trade weight 2 and 3 score lambs, 18kg to 22 kg sold from $142to $174/head and averaged around 760c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight 3 and 4 score lambs, 22kg to 24kg sold from $167 to $189/head and they ranged from 715c to 770c to average around 750c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 and 4 score lambs, 24kg to 26kg sold from $183 to $207/head and averaged around 750c/kg cwt. The export weight lambs sold from $204 to $225, with the extra heavy export weight lambs selling from $230to $264/head at around 725c/kg cwt. Trade weight Merino lambs sold from $156 to $159, and the lighter weights sold from $126 to$150/head, they averaged from 670c to 680c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred hoggets sold from $132 to $199, with the Merino hoggets selling from$135 to $159/head.

There were 11,000 sheep penned for another larger offering. Large numbers of Merino wethers were yarded and made to $190/head. There was a good penning of all weight and grades, with the regular buying group keen to secure numbers. Sheep sold to strong competition to bearer, with most sheep selling $5 to $10 dearer, better-covered sheep were mostly $10 to $15 stronger, with heavy sheep selling to $30/head dearer at times.

Lightweight sheep sold from $69 to $131 and averaged around 530c/kg cwt, with very light sheep selling from $33 to $77/head. Mediumweight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $90 to $154/head, and ranged from 440c to 630c, with the Merino mutton averaging around 585c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $155 to $176, heavy Merino wethers sold from $145 to $190, with the medium weights selling from $104to $170/head, the heavy Merino sheep ranged from 570c to 595c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred sheep sold from $130 to $220/head and averaged around 520c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $6 to $110/head.
