Mutton cheaper at Ballarat

Lamb numbers dropped to 19,930 yarded, quality slipped in the lighter weights and into the medium trade weights, while the quality improved over the heavy and extra heavy lambs. Not all the usual buyers were present with extra store competition from New South Wales in a market that had mixed results. The market opened strong over the lighter weights and backed off as the sale progressed, while the heavy trade and export lambs in excellent condition off supplementary feed gained the most interest with bidding intensifying over these categories. Store buyers were again chasing numbers, but weren’t as keen on the plainer secondary types, selling to $5/head cheaper. Light trade sold to $7 to $10/head softer, Medium trade were firm to a few dollars easier. Heavy trade sold to $10/head stronger and heavy export lambs sold to a top of $282 selling to $25/head dearer to a week ago.

Lambs back to the paddock sold from $32 to $132 and lambs to feed on made from $130 to $155/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg sold from $71 to $128/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $131 to $170, lambs 22 to 26kg sold $153 to $202/head to have a wide range from 620c to 745c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $190 to $242 and over 30kg sold from $230 to $282/head with an average range of 730c to 760c/kg cwt. Heavy Hoggets made from $100 to $184 for the crossbreds and $59 to $133/head for Merino’s. Merino Lambs sold from $12 to $140/head.

Mutton numbers increased to 14,440, with not as many buyers on the rail bidding this week. The market opened softer and bounced from $5 to $30/head cheaper throughout the sale, several pens sold under $10/head. Merino wethers sold from $40 to $96 for the light weights and $81 to $130 for the heavy weights, slipping $11 to $20/head. Merino Ewes made from $12 to $85 for the lighter weights and $70 to $122/head for the heavy weights, selling to $15 to $20/head softer. Heavy crossbred mutton made from $86 to $132, and the light weights made from $16 to $98, selling from $10 to $30 cheaper.
