No clear trends at Ballarat

Yarding: 28,038

Lamb numbers increased to 15,600, with more than usual new season lambs yarded due to the ongoing dryer conditions in the surrounding regions. Quality was mostly very good, lambs however are starting to show dryness in the skins. Most of the usual buying group attended in a market that opened softer than gained momentum as the sale progressed, then become erratic and bounced from stronger to softer off last week’s levels. Light and medium trade lambs sold from $3 to $10 softer while the Heavy trade lambs gained $6/head in places.

Heavy export sold to a top of $260 to be $10/head stronger. Store Lambs sold $5 either side of firm. Old lambs were limited with numbers decreasing week on week selling $10 to $15/head cheaper with quality and limited numbers a factor. New season Lamb back to the paddock made from $35 to $145 and $152 to $168/head for lambs to feed on.

New season Light trade lambs under 18kg to suit MK orders sold from $82 to $144/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $142 to $185, 22 to 26kg sold $184 to $230/head, with a wide range from 740c to 880c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $216 to $260/head to average around 880c/kg cwt. Hoggets sold from $91 to $144 for the crossbreds and $24 to $115/head for the Merino’s.

Mutton numbers dropped slightly to 12,432 penned, quality also slipped with a range of plain to very good. Merino wethers selling from $35 to $94, Slipping $5/head. Light weight Merino Ewes made from $15 to $65 and the heavier weights made from $70 to $85, selling firm to $5/head stronger, to average from 250c to 300c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred mutton made from $67 to $95, slipping $5 and the lighter weights made from $17 to $68 selling from $3/head better.
