NZ copping wild storm

A large and powerful winter storm has lashed the South Island of New Zealand, with areas such as Dunedin, Timaru and Ashburton experiencing the worst of the storm, with more heavy rain and strong winds forecast tomorrow.
A State of Emergency was declared in the Timaru district at 3pm NZ time, then tonight for the Dunedin district as heavy rain has resulted in flash flooding of several areas.
Heavy rain in the South Island has broken records in Oamaru and Timaru, where 67.4mm of rain fell between 6am and 6pm today.
The previous record for the wettest July day was in 1908, when 111mm fell. In Oamaru 57.6mm fell between 9am and 5pm, beating the previous record set in 1974. Ashburton received more rain than the average for the whole month, with 76mm falling between 6am and 4pm.
The New Zealand MetService has tonight issued a new severe weather warning for heavy rain and severe gales for parts of central and southern New Zealand.
