Prices kick nicely at Ballarat

Lamb numbers dropped to 17,557 penned, quality was mixed with an excellent run of extra heavy export lambs, but numbers were limited.  Trade weights ranged from plain to very good, also had limited numbers of well finished lambs on offer. A smaller buying gallery was on the rail with more bidding intensity over most weights and grades, in a dearer market across the yarding. Light store and trade lambs sold $8 to $20 better, medium and heavy trade were $8 to $15/head dearer. Buyers were chasing the really neat short skin lambs with some sales $25/head stronger to a week ago.  Heavy and extra heavy export lambs sold from $10 to $17 dearer to a top of $275/head.   

Lambs back to the paddock sold from $33 to $134 and lambs to feed on made from $125 to $148/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg sold from $64 to $130/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $120 to $170, lambs 22 to 26kg sold $148 to $194/head to have an average range of 680c to 720c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $178 to $218 and over 30kg sold from $215 to $275/head with an average range of 685c to 695c/kg cwt. Hoggets made from $48 to $174 for the crossbreds and $36 to $117/head for Merino’s, gaining $10 to $20 in places. Merino Lambs sold from $27 to $74 for the lighter and plainer types and $85 to $155 for the heavier weights.

Mutton numbers remained similar with 11,900 penned. Quality ranged from plain to every good. The market opened strong and remained strong throughout the sale. Merino wethers sold from $39 to $88 for the light weights and $88 to $139 for the heavy weights with good skin length, gaining $5 to $10/head. Merino Ewes made from $15 to $101, for the lighter weights and $83 to $114/head for the heavy weights, selling firm to a few dollars dearer. Heavy crossbred mutton sold to $5 better and made from $73 to $115, and the light weights made from $15 to $86/head, to be $5 to $8/head dearer.
