Prices stronger for Mutton in the first Bendigo Sheep and Lamb sale for the year

Overall, numbers remained the same and the quality was mixed. There were a few ideal trade and heavy lambs and a larger number of secondary lambs lacking cover and weight. All the usual buyers returned and the market sold to a stronger trend.

The heavier restocking lambs sold from $70 to $103/head. The 2 score processing lambs made from $85 to $125/head. Medium and heavy trade weights sold from $136 to $170/head, while most averaged from 700c to 720c, with isolated sales to 760c/kg cwt. Heavy lambs received from $160 to $193 and extra heavy lambs made from $194 to $210/head, as carcase prices sold from 695c to 710c/kg cwt on average. Merino lambs sold from $110 to $130/head, averaging just over 600c/kg cwt. Heavy hoggets reached $164/head.

Mutton numbers eased and the quality varied. Prices were stronger on most weights. Light sheep sold from 425 to $68/head. Medium weight ewes sold from $71 to $115/head. Heavy Crossbred ewes made from $99 to $144 and Merino ewes reached $138, as wethers sold for $150/head. Carcase prices averaged from 410c to 440c/kg cwt.
