A decrease of 5,400 lambs saw 22,400 head yarded at Ballarat in the lead up to the Easter weekend. The quality varied from average to good, although there were not as many heavy and extra heavy lambs yarded this week. There was a good mix of better covered trade weight, and lighter weight lambs yarded. The usual buying group attended and operated keenly in a mainly dearer market on last week, with the light and medium weight lambs making from $4 to $7/head dearer, while the heavy weight lambs sold close to last week’s levels. Extra heavy lambs reached $215, with the medium trade weight, 22-24kg lambs making from $154 to $186/head, to average close to 720c/kg cwt. Processors, feeders and restockers were active and operated keenly, with feeders and restockers paying mostly from $121 to $152.50, and from $40 to$95/head for their replacements.

Light weight lambs 12-18 kg, sold from $94 to $142/head. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs 18-22kg, made from $135 to $172.50/head and averaged approximately 730c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight lambs 22-24 kg, sold from $154 to $186/head or from 670c to 775c to average close to 720c/kg cwt. Heavy trade lambs 24-26kg, sold from $175 to $189/head. The export weight lambs 26-30 kg, received from $178 to$207, and the extra heavy export weight lambs made $215/head to average approximately 650c/kg cwt. Merino lambs sold from $124 to$136/head and averaged close to 680c/kg cwt. Crossbred hoggets sold to $160/head.

There were 10,800 sheep yarded, easing 6,400/head on last week. Some excellent quality, Merino wethers in large runs sold to $182, with heavy crossbred ewes reaching $177/head. All weights and grades were on offer, but with not as many light sheep penned this week. The usual buying group operated in a market that fluctuated at times, with the light and medium weight sheep making from close to firm to $8/head dearer at times. The heavy Merino and crossbred sheep, with not as much weight this week, eased from $2 to $10/head at times. The big runs of heavy Merino wethers improved a few dollars this week.

Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $44 to $105 and averaged approximately 450c/kg cwt, with very light sheep making from $11 to$70/head. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $68 to $132/head or from 340c to 540c, with the Merino mutton averaging close to495c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $125 to $160, heavy Merino wethers made from $134 to $182 and the medium weights received from $86 to $125/head. The heavy Merino sheep averaged from 505c to 520c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred ewes sold from $110 to $177/headand averaged close to 475c/kg cwt. Crossbred wethers sold from $110 to $177 and rams eased this week, making from $6 to $65/head
