Ram Sellers worried in WA

The shrinking ewe base in WA is causing concern for WA seed stock producers in the lead up to the WA ram selling season.

The drought like conditions in many areas is causing people to sell off numbers to reduce the pain of hand feeding and if things don't improve quickly, it looks like a long Spring and Summer for many.

WA's sheep population has been dropping for many years now due to a push into more broadacre cropping. You wonder when sheep numbers reach that point when it becomes unsustainable due to the lack of markets caused by isolation and distance from the Eastern markets.

Many WA Seed stock producers rely on the Ram income as a top up to their commercial businesses. But as for this year, in reality, it looks like Ram sales will be all but a shadow of those boom years when the WA Ram selling seasons were massive.

Let's hope for a turnaround and some late Winter rain can make a difference
