Farm Tender

Selling direct this year took care of the the tractor payments...

By Kelsey Miller - Stocka

I created Stocka to help farmers to reduce their selling costs if they are prepared to market their own livestock. One of my most important customers is my family's farm in the North East of Victoria- after all it's the reason I started Stocka.

So I thought I would share the impact that Stocka has had on our business over the course of the spring. It is a year of transition for us as the family ramps up our Angus herd, moves to a spring calving pattern and settles in a new property.

So far this year the family have sold 50 steers, 50 weaners and 60 choppers direct, with a 100 vealers going to the yards. We have used a mix of direct marketing methods- the choppers going over the hook to Greenham's at Moe, our steers and weaners to Hopkins River Pastoral out of the paddock.

So how did we go? For each deal we had a quick look at the local markets to determine how we went on price. Then we calculated how much we spent on selling costs to get an idea of how much additional profit we made on the direct trades versus if we had sold via the yards.

On our choppers we estimate selling direct via the premium grid at Moe using Stocka made us an additional $6,000. On our steers and weaners that we sent to Hopkins River we estimate we ended up $7000 ahead of the yards. That's a total on $13000 in additional profit, not a bad return on a few phone calls by my brother. That was a combination of better sale prices and cutting selling costs by using Stocka Protect and Transit.

Next year the family is looking forward to having the right herd to maximise our ability to trade direct, in the meantime the good news is that the $13,000 has taken care of this year's tractor payments!
