Sheep numbers bigger than Lamb numbers at Ballarat

Yarding - 10,692 (-2,111).

Lambs - 4,305 (-2,377).

Sheep - 6,386 (+266).

Lamb numbers were back again this week to 4,305, again seeing the end of last seasons lambs yarded. Only a few pens of new season lambs were offered. The usual buying group attended and operated in a firm market on last weeks levels. Not all weights were covered with no extra heavy 30kg+ lambs offered. The quality was mixed with the heaviest lambs selling to $215/head.

Light weight 1 and 2 score lambs 12kg to 18kg sold from $107 to $120/head to average 750c/kg cwt. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs 18kg to22kg sold from $143 to $172/head to average around 760c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight 3 score lambs 22kg to 24kg sold from $170 to $192/head, ranging from 717c to 783c to average 760c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 and 4 score trade weight lambs 24kg to 26kg sold from $193 to$212/head to average around 780c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26kg to 30kg sold to $215/head to average around 775c/kg cwt. Hoggets sold from $45 to $168 for crossbreds and Merinos from $77 to $124/head.

Sheep supply was up this week to 6,386 head. Quality was plain to good. The usual buying group operated in a firm to slightly cheaper trend to be around 10c to 20c/kg back on last weeks levels in places, with good quality lines of well presented Merino ewes and wethers offered.Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep made from $75 to $105 to average 540c/kg cwt and very light weights sold to $75/head. Medium weight 2and 3 score sheep sold from $106 to $149/head. Merino mutton averaged around 570c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred ewes sold to $190/head.Heavy Merino ewes sold to $178/head averaging around 580c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino wethers sold from $150 to $178 and medium weights sold from $114 to $149/head.
