Sheep sold to keen demand at the 1st Bendigo market

The first sale at Bendigo for 2020 saw 11,250 lambs, and 4,800 sheep offered, to a regular full field of buyers. The quality ranged from average to very good, with the majority of the lambs now shorn. Heavy shorn lambs reached $220, with quality trade weights selling from $165 to $178/head to average around 730c/kg cwt. Restockers paid from $73 to $150/head for unshorn and shorn lambs. There were several pens of lambs donated to charity which attracted spirited competition and were shared by processors and exporters.
Shorn light weight 2 score lambs sold from $105 to $133/head. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs, 18-22kg, sold from $146 to $159/head and averaged around 720c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight 2 and 3 score lambs, 22-24 kg, sold from $162 to $178/head and sold from 705c to 745cto average around 730c/kg cwt. Heavy 3-4 score trade weight lambs sold from $175 to $195/head. Export weight lambs sold from $192 to $220/head and averaged around 740c/kg cwt. Trade weight unshorn young lambs sold from $148 to $152/head and averaged around720c/kg cwt, With heavy unshorn young lambs selling from $197 to $218/head. Crossbred hoggets sold from $112 to $190, with Merino hogetts selling from $152 to $155/head.

The reduced sheep offering of 4,800 head covered all weights and grades, with plenty of weight through the crossbred run. Sheep continue to sell to keen demand with one Northern processor very active on heavy sheep. Heavy crossbred ewes reached $208/head. Light weight 2 score sheep sold from $69 to $106/head and averaged around 510c/kg cwt. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $80 to $155/head, they made from 420c to 620c, with Merino mutton averaging around 565c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $140 to $170, with the heavy Merino wethers also selling form $140 to $170/head, they averaged around 600c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred sheep sold from $114 to $208/headto average around 530c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $40 to $103/head.
