A slight heartbeat for Hay
For the fortnight up to the 6th of May 2020
Mike Pickard reports that the Eastern Darling Downs is drying out with no follow-up rain for some time now. This is disappointing after such a good period post-drought.
It's a very different story in most parts so New South Wales and Victoria, who have got off to a very good start to the season. I think Tasmania has had a good start in spots, SA is a little more patchy, and Southern Western Australia is dry (a few mm in the last day or so), but this is not unusual, and they are not in panic mode yet.
But in saying all that the sales guys reckon there is a sign of life for the Hay job. This is promising but doesn't mean it's all going to happen.
The frost are just starting so we will know more in the next fortnight or three weeks.
We still have plenty of interest in Hay Equipment in the North. Vast acres of Grass in New South Wales and Queensland has seen a spike in the Hay Equipment market
What's happened to Hay prices over the last fortnight?
There were limited sales of Cereal Hay, price trade around the $200/mt mark
The Lucerne Hay market is still holding up ok with races being one of the few sports still going, those Horses still have to eat. Lucerne Growers would be winding up there last cuts for the season.
Paul and Shane sold a few parcels of Vetch Hay at under the $300/mt mark for the first time in ages.
All Straw sold at under $100/mt
We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Sales people have to say:
Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - The season is starting to go a little pear-shaped on the Eastern Darling Downs in Queensland, where there has been no follow-up rain. As the weather cools down, demand will pick up. Spot loads of Cereal and Vetch Hay is selling, but only locally. I had a couple of larger Straw sales going to Piggeries.

Shane Ruyg - Queensland based
Shane said - Starting to see some more enquires come through for both Straw and Hay with the weather coming in cold an wet over the past week or two in parts of the Eastern states. With the likelyhood of colder weather in the horizon, I think we will start to see an increase of buyers looking for decent Protein Hay for their Livestock along with Straw for there mixes. Paul Grayling - Mallee Vic based
Paul said - We have seen more enquiries on Protein Hay, mainly Vetch Hay, The price has dropped back a bit. With the weather cooling off we are expecting to see the level of enquiry improve on all lines. Pricing has dropped so if you have had a listing on the site it's probably time to have another look at it as things will lift in the next few months. Jackie Elliott - South West Vic based
Jackie said - I have had a few people ask what Hay is up to and being the newby I am just going off what the other guys are saying more so. They are starting to see a little enquiry here and there but not much. Southern Victoria is cooling, but it hasn't got overly wet as yet. I dare say I will have more to report in the next fortnight. Catch you in a fortnight
