Cutting Crop
For the fortnight up to the 11h of August 2019 - Volume 41.
This article is bought to you by Marson Industries Australia and Molloy Contracting.
Hay sales were back on the previous fortnight as far as volumes were concerned.
Farmers are gearing up for what looks like a very big Hay making season. Farmers are saying they will assess Crop and Pasture paddocks on an individual basis; some have made those decisions already. The next 3 or 4 weeks could make a dint the Grain volumes if the weather warms up again and the rain stays away.
Some places look magnificent, and in pockets of Victoria, SA, WA and Tassie things couldn't look better. These guys are in the box seat.
Sales of Hay Machinery and Equipment has been "off tap". Self Propelled Mower Conditioners and Windrowers, Tow behind Mower Conditioners, Balers and Rakes have been selling like hot cakes in the last month. Also, the PAC (in Elmore) has been busy selling Twine, Wrap and other Hay accessories.
On a negative note, parts of Queensland and NSW are still struggling big time with wind been a very big factor over the last fortnight. It's nearly as tough as it's ever been in these areas and we are constantly reminded of the situation by the many people we speak to who are living this on a daily basis. Our hope is that things improve very soon.

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
The focus and interest is on new season Hay and Silage. New season Cereal Hay is running at around $250/mt plus and Vetch Hay selling at around $300/mt
Old season Cereal and Vetch Hay is selling at a premium to the new season prices mentioned above, but that will change when bales start hitting the ground on mass.
Pricing of Hay and future volume levels are real talking points, and our guys at the coal face are asked their opinions constantly. Batting for both the seller and buyer put's us in a precarious position, but we constantly talk about how we need to "tell it how it is" and we won't waiver from that.
We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee basedShane said - Wth the phone ringing hot we are hearing that some Crops are failing out there in the Southern Riverina and Northern Victoria and the likely hood of them making grain now are quite slim. This will put pressure on the pricing and the next few weeks will tell where that may end up with the likely hood of more Hay than previously predicted.
Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - We’re getting plenty of enquiries about new season Hay at the moment with lots of buyers looking to lock in their supplies. There are a lot of Crops getting cut at the moment, and many sellers are keen to sell straight out of the paddock. New seasons Cereal Hay prices (VIC) are currently sitting at around $250-$285/mt, and there are several Vetch Hay listings for around $300/mt ex-farm.
Mike said - Buyers in Queensland and Northern New South Wales are waiting to see what the quality and quantity of new season Hay down south is like. Once this has been determined, they will then look to place orders if things are favourable. We are also hearing from experienced Haymakers that some Hay in Queensland and Northern New South Wales being rushed into the bale too quickly.
Paul said - We are starting to see a lot of New Season Hay being listed. Cereal is around the $250/mt mark with Vetch sitting at around $300/mt. These prices could take a further dive if Crops across the Mallee's (SA & Vic), Riverina and Northern Vic get cut for Hay which is looking more likely. We have had considerable enquiries on the EOI listings that are already up on the site.
