Dry Times Continue
For the fortnight up to the 13th of March, 2019 - Volume 28. This article is bought to you by Vic Feeds.
As the dry times continue, the focus on Hay becomes more prevalent. There is plenty of number crunching taking place around kitchen tables and in Farm offices on the back of diminishing Cattle and Sheep values. We all know that these values are only short term or until it rains. But right now Farmers have to make decisions to either keep or sell and either decision isn't an easy one.
Just how much Hay is out there is the 64,000 dollar question. The guys give some perspective on that below

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Hay Sales people have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Hay enquires are constant, and we are now seeing bigger quantities being bought. More uncertainty due to the dry continuing, lots of livestock being offloaded in NSW over the last few weeks. I think Hay in short supply, and there is not likely to much around by mid-year.
Bonnie said - Plenty of enquiries coming in at the moment, I am seeing demand for Protein Hay right now. All types of Hay achieving slightly higher prices over the last fortnight.
Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - For our Queensland customer we are seeing Hay come down from the North of the state, the rest is being imported from down South. A Hay buyer driving around SA and Western Vic told me there is not alot out there, although he said there is plenty of Straw. He is saying unless more comes out of the woodwork, we could be out of hay by the end of April. I hope he is wrong

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - Demand continues to grow from both NSW and VIC with parcels moving alot more readily now. Enquiry on Straw is lifting as people are weighing up options and using alternative Feed to make up rations. Cereal Hay and Canola Hay are still proving popular with some good quality testing Hay still around. Supply will begin to tighten up at some stage.
Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
Canola Hay has been making from $280/mt to $315/mt about a $5-$10/mt rise for the fortnight, Wheaten and Barley Hay prices increased by $10-$15/mt, to trade in the $280/mt to $340/mt range.
Good Lucerne Hay is making up to $450/mt and is in demand, and Vetch made $380/mt with limited parcels sold. Some really good Clover Hay traded at $370/mt.
There was a lift in demand for Straw with most selling around the $110-$120/mt range.
