Hay demand and sales drop considerably
For the fortnight up to the 14th of August, 2019 - Volume 39.
This article is bought to you by Trigger Vale Sheep Studs.
After weeks of reporting a similar storyline, the last fortnight has seen some distinct changes in the Hay Market. Firstly, demand and secondly, sales have dropped off to levels not seen since January 2018 when there was two seasons worth of supply and only limited demand.
There is a definite focus on the new season. With further rain over the last week only enhancing the Hay season throughout Victoria and South Australia, all pointing to some kind of recovery in supply levels. But as they say in the Grains industry, you haven't got it until it's in the silo, the same applies to Hay, it's not yours until its in the bale or better still undercover.

The season to the North is not good with only pockets here, and there can say they are going ok. Livestock numbers have been decimated, and this, combined with a few other reasons, means demand from the North is going to be a shadow of its former self.
One shining light is the Feedlot sector, with the number of Cattle on feed reaching a record of 1.147 million for the April to June period. Read the article here.
With potentially good yields in the South, we have also heard that one exporter is fully booked for the new season and is taking no more.
Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
As mentioned above, sales of Hay and Straw have dropped off considerably. Therefore prices have followed suit.
Sales of Canola and Cereal dropped $50/mt or so to around the mid $300's or less.

Good quality Vetch Hay lost a similar amount with sales recorded under $400/mt. Lucerne Hay sales were limited, as were Clover Hay sales.
Straw has been hard to come by for some time now, and prices retreated over the last fortnight by about $20-30/mt from around $200/mt or better a fortnight ago.
We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee basedShane said - The Hay landscape has changed considerably in the past fortnight with pricing easing due to the up an coming harvest for new season Hay. We have seen pricing drop as much as $50/mt for some types as sellers look to offload their old season Hay. There have been large parcels of 'New Season' Hay sold for Oct/Nov pickup with prices down considerably from old season Hay numbers. In saying that, we are still getting enquiry for those who can't wait and are needing feed now.
Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - We're seeing a lot of smaller, leftover parcels coming on to the market as sellers look to prepare for the upcoming Hay season. These are still selling reasonably quickly, but demand has slowed down somewhat.

Mike said - There is lots of interest in new season Hay, just where it will be priced and how much is out there is another story. Some growers have committed portions of their Hay to exporters. Demand from Northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland is only steady at present. Those who can afford to are waiting for the new season pricing. There is new season Hay in Central Queensland that will be available 3 to 4 weeks earlier than the Southern market Hay
Paul said - Enquiry on Hay has slowed up as the focus is on the new season. Prices have dropped a little as people don’t want to be caught with old season stock when new season is available. There is some very good protein Hay on the website that is well worth looking at.
