Hay Market settles with a slight easing in prices
For the fortnight up to the 4th of December 2018 - Volume 21.
All our Farm Tender sales people reported a slight easing of Hay prices over the last two weeks in what looks like a pretty stable market right now. The phones have been running pretty hot, but it's not a "panic" type market like we saw earlier in the year. Demand has been steady with buyers working out what they will need long-term, buying in drib and drabs rather than buying the whole lot in one go.
Buyers in the last month or so have been very picky, sifting through the tests result, evaluating prices, location, bale weights etc, and working out the best value Hay that suits their needs.
The devastation fires in Central Queensland has created a run on Queensland based Hay that can be moved quickly. These guys have been experiencing temperatures around the 45-degree mark. There is talk of a possible cyclone next week.
The hot weather would be putting pressure on the Sorghum Crop in some areas and rain will be needed once this Hot run comes to an end.
As far as prices go Clover mix Hay was a popular seller and making around the $255 mark, Wheaten and Barley Hay $265-$275, mid-range testing Canola Hay around the $265-$275. Vetch Hay is harder to find, and the good testing stuff is still making $400. These prices are all ex Farm mainly Vic and SA, and dependant on the test, bale weights, location, quality etc.
Farmers doing straw post Harvest are getting it tested, and the results are surprisingly good.
Once again we emphasise the importance of good photos, accurate descriptions and a Hay test.
