Farm Tender

The Farm Tender Hay Report – Hot, Dry Weather lifting demand

Hot, Dry Weather lifting demand.

For the fortnight up to the 30th of January, 2019 - Volume 25.

I spoke to a customer that Farms Beef Cattle in the Tamworth area, he is on the hunt for Hay again after having 6 inches of rain back a couple of months ago, but with no rain since, the Cattle are once again getting hungry. There would be similar stories out there and hence the reason why the Hay phone has started ringing again

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Hay Sales people have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Hay still in demand with dry and hot conditions continuing. Prices have stayed firm. We have had lots of interest in rain damaged Hay in Central Victoria, due to pricing being lower. More interest from bigger buyers like Feedlots and Traders starting to surface

Bonnie Kenner - Central Vic based
Bonnie said - Quite a bit of hay getting listed up at the moment and enquiries increasing over the last week or two. Buyers still a little picky and Hay that is testing well is selling fairly easily

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - Hay inquiries are picking up through Northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland, people are very freight conscious, and we need to source stuff as close as possible to meet price expectations

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - Things are dry and good quality protein Hay is in short supply already, growers are keen to see the big bucks whereas sellers are looking at the bottom rung first. My advice would be to work out what you need and lock it away as stocks will continue to dwindle. I am hearing that a fair bit of low $200 cereal Hay down in Southern Victoria is nearly all gone...

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
Canola Hay prices stayed about the same and ranged $230/mt to $270/mt, Wheaten and Barley Hay firmed slightly with a couple of parcels of the right stuff trading above the $320/mt mark

Lucerne Hay sales grew with some lesser quality stuff making $370/mt and $390/mt, still good money if it's off dryland and a first cut. Vetch is hard to track down, and some good Pasture Hay made $300/mt

Straw is selling from $110/mt up to $150/mt and has been popular in the last fortnight.
