The Farm Tender Hay Report – Lack of rain in NSW and Qld a worry

Lack of rain in NSW and Qld a worry.

For the fortnight up to the 5th of June, 2019 - Volume 34.

This article is bought to you by CommStream Capital.

Farmers in the Hay growing regions of Victoria and SA are pretty happy with the season so far and are on track to get something as far as Hay is concerned. These areas are carrying the can for the Hay industry with things not so favourable North of the Murray River and in WA. This is a vast area that will do it tough through the winter. This has put a new load of pressure on the Hay market.

WA is less of a concern because of the bumper season of last. Those in NSW and Queensland going into the Winter dry after drought conditions last years is a cause for real concern.

In the better Southern areas, mixed Farmers who have livestock are thinking about releasing some Hay onto the market, but many aren't game to pull the trigger just yet.

So as we speak, we are seeing Cereal Hay trade in, around and above the $400/mt mark and good quality Canola Hay not far behind. See below more detailed pricing.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Status quo with the Hay again with only small quantities available, pricing is increasing with Cereal Hay $400 plus per mt. Still plenty of enquiry and demand with the weather getting colder and wetter as we enter Winter.

Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - Things are reasonably quiet as supplies are dropping even further. Even good quality Cereal Straw is extremely difficult to source and what's being listed is being sold very quickly to keen buyers. Hay and Straw is going to get harder and harder to find as we head into the winter months. So I would encourage buyers to act quickly if the opportunity arises to purchase any.

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - Little Hay coming out of the woodwork in the Northern NSW and Southern Queensland areas. Some small activity on Cane Trash and Corn Silage inquiry is picking up.

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - Hay is getting extremely tight with stocks very low, alternative feeds are highly sought after, We have some Feed Potatoes as an option also some Feed Corn listings. Small parcels of Straw and Silage are also available, but won't be for much longer. Pricing is on a case by case basis due to the lack of competition vs the high demand. Happy hunting.

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
Straw prices are still rising, what commanded $150/mt a month ago is now making $200/mt. There is plenty of activity on Corn Trash, and even Canola and Rice Straw is getting some interest.

Cereal Hay and Canola Hay moved to a new level in the last fortnight trading around the $400/mt mark and in some case above this level.

Vetch and Lucerne Hay is hard to come by and the little bit of Vetch Hay we traded made $485/mt. Lucerne is a level above again, with some trading at $550/mt in the last fortnight. It's a seller market that's for sure.
