March to shape the Hay Season
For the fortnight up to the 27th of February, 2019 - Volume 27The level of enquiry for Hay has lifted in the last fortnight, however that hasn't really resonated in higher sales volumes at this stage. What has been selling in the last fortnight is at a slightly higher rate than the fortnight previous, so price are a little firmer.
We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Hay Sales people have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Another busy fortnight with some buyers starting to take position on Hay an others still conservative with the unknown of what's to come in the season, Canola Hay is still popular with plenty of interest from Northern buyers and Dairy Cocky's as it's priced well below Vetch Hay with the protein levels fairly comparable. We think March will really shape the Hay season as the enquires are at an all-time high which means some busy times ahead.
Bonnie Kenner - Central Vic based
Bonnie said - Hay enquiries are increasing, both Cereal and Pasture Hay pretty popular at the moment. Good quality Lucerne and Vetch Hay getting harder to find. Prices slightly firmer and some of the volume buyers are looking to secure large parcels.
Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - Hearing some resistance to paying high freight costs on Hay into Northern NSW and Queensland. For Hay Carriers, a load of "something" going South means they can bring the freight cost down.
Some in Riverina are frightened that they may be left holding Straw so have cut prices to get it moving, pricing is around the $110/mt - $115/mt mark around Coleambally. A couple of Farmers in Wimmera looking to move something have lowered their prices in the last couple of days.
Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - We are starting to see more widespread enquiry on Hay, As per the norm, the battle over Cost v's Quality is raging with the lesser priced Hay and Straw being looked at as more of an option. We are still moving some of the higher quality Protein Hay, but only in smaller amounts. Lucerne Hay is in demand, but not making crazy money ($500+) like the end of last year. Like sub soil moisture, the $$$ seem to be drying up.
Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
Canola Hay has been making from $275/mt to $300/mt about a $5/mt rise for the fortnight, Wheaten and Barley Hay prices increased by $5/mt to 10/mt to trade in the $270/mt to $325/mt range.
Good Lucerne Hay is making up to $450/mt and is in demand, and Vetch made $380/mt with limited parcels sold. Some really good Clover Hay traded at $370/mt.
There seems to be a bit of Straw around with most selling around the $110/mt. We sold some Rice Straw for $30/bale and some Vetch Straw for $205/mt
We have just added the Australian Fodder Industry Association or AFIA as a Prime Preferred Partner, and we are looking to help grow the membership base of this organisation.
