New season Hay prices to be more buyer friendly.
For the fortnight up to the 31st of July, 2019 - Volume 38.
This article is bought to you by Victorian State Marnoo Merinos Field Day.
Not a great deal changed in the last fortnight for Hay. Prices stuck fat compared with the fortnight before, but there is talk of some discount for New Season Hay prices already. This is a bit of a reprieve for buyers who have been asked to fork out the big coin for some time now.
The new season is shaping up to be a ripper in most if the Hay growing areas of SA, Vic and WA. Rain continues to fall in these areas, and it's often been more than the BOM forecasts. The same cannot be said to the North with conditions in a terrible state right now.
Ths AFIA Fodder Conference was on this week, and our very own Matt Henke attended. I think he found it pretty interesting and I will seek out a report from him for the next Hay Report in a fortnight.
Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
Cereal and Canola Hay is selling anywhere in the $400/mt-$450/mt range.
The sales of Vetch and Lucerne Hay were limited. Prices if anything came back slightly for Vetch Hay in and around the $450/mt mark. Lucerne Hay prices remained in the mid $500/mt range and got as high at $560/mt ex Farm. Good quality Medic Hay was making up to $450/mt, and Pasture Hay sold from $360/mt to $395/mt
There were some parcels of Cereal Straw come on the market that made between $180/mt to $220/mt. The Cane Trash supply is not too far away.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee basedShane said - Hay is still in demand, supplies are still short, especially Straw. Hay sales have been constant, but it seems to be softening a tad as some areas are reasonably wet and getting quite green. This doesn't take into account the dry conditions in NSW and Qld where they are doing it tough again and are in badly need of rain ASAP. Otherwise most will be looking at a summer Crop (providing it rains) to get feed. Grain sales are unusually quiet with a Mexican standoff between buyers and sellers, this doesn't look like changing in the short term.
Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - Bonnie is away on leave this week
Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - We are seeing only small parcels of Hay being listed up North at the moment. These are selling quickly as Hay makers are clearing out the sheds before the new season starts. There will be a price correction as the new season hits the market. We also hear there could be some frost damage of Crops in Central Queensland; these Crops look pretty good and will make decent Hay.
Paul said - We are starting to see a few expressions of interest in new seasons Hay off the Baler with the price well back on what it currently is now. $250 for Cereal Hay is a ballpark figure which I'm hearing getting bounced around; this is a lot more user-friendly to buyers.
