Rain a game changer in the short term
For the fortnight up to the 18th of December 2018 - Volume 22.
Widespread rain in the Eastern States will slow down the demand for Hay in the short term as Farmers get some "green grass" relief from hand feeding.
We are tipping that the rain will drive prices down slightly over the Christmas period.
Goondiwindi based Farm Tender Salesman Mike Pickard reports that he has plenty of Hay and Straw listed in the Southern Queensland and Northern NSW region, but demand is limited unless it's to a Feedlot.
On the positive side, the 2018/19 season has been supported by some of the lowest carry-over stock levels in many years.
Canola Hay was the most popular selling Hay in the last fortnight with prices ranging from $205/mt to $275/mt depending on the test, location and bale weights.
Wheaten and Barley Hay sales weren't far behind with prices ranging from $250/mt to $290/mt in the last fortnight.
Clover Hay has been selling in the $275/mt to 300/mt range, with Clover Hay mixes at a slightly discounted rate depending on the percentage of Clover.
Lucerne Hay has been solid at around the $400/mt mark for some time now and there were limited sales of Vetch Hay in the last fortnight
Straw has been popular lately with sales ranging from $110/mt up to $150/mt
Sellers are advised to protect their Hay anyway they can with either tarps, caps or under a shed. Hay that has been covered all the way through will be premium in value compared to uncovered stock
When listing Hay we emphasise the importance of good photos, accurate descriptions and a Hay test.
