The Farm Tender Hay Report – Same, same but different

Same, same but different

For the fortnight up to the 23rd of October 2019 - Volume 44.

This article is bought to you by Frankling Custom Feeds.

As I mentioned in something recently, we could be doing a Hay Report every week, and within a few days, it would be out of date. But one thing that is a constant right now, and has been for the last four or five weeks, has been the price of Hay. Buyers love consistency in price, and it seems a "happier" market when it's stable like this, the angst seems to disappear as buyers and seller seem to find some more common ground.

Test results are starting to come in, and we are seeing indications that it's a pretty good vintage is season 2019. That helps the cause.

Gee, it doesn't look like it wants to rain anywhere at the moment, area's that have been terrible are worse, areas that were ok and now not so good and areas that were looking pretty good have gone backwards. I am not game to say that some areas look spot on because things have changed.

I flew from Melbourne to Mildura on Friday and sat on the window seat on the right side of the plane and was amazed at the number of cut paddocks North of Bendigo, and as far as the eye could see.

Interesting to note that new Hay Baler sales are up 34 percent on last year, we have certainly noticed the same trend for used Balers, and when we do a website upgrade I will be able to supply the exact data around that.

We have completed two Auctions on our new Auctions platform, and I am just throwing it out there, but would people be interested in doing Hay Auctions? Might be something to explore down the track.....

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:

Amazingly, the market has been as steady as it has been for some time, prices have levelled, as both buyers and sellers get a better understanding as to where the market is at. With the rain disappearing, Grain Crop predictions are heading Southwards by the day, and we could have our lowest Crop for some decades.

It's a broken record, but prices for Cereals is around the $250/mt mark and Vetch Hay in and around the $300/mt mark.

There is probably more Canola Crops being felled than we first thought and it is selling at Cereal Hay prices or a little better. Users of Canola Hay will be interested in where this year's nitrate counts sit before committing to parcels.

The Lucerne Hay market is a little bit of an isolated case right now; the Horse market prefers Lucerne and with the lack of Water for Irrigation (and the price) finding it can be an issue. The experts expect Lucerne Hay to be a premium price from this point on.

Bonnie points out below that there is already strong interest in Cereal Straw. We have seen a rise in popularity in all types of Straw in the last two years as Farmers using Feed Mixer Wagons are learning how to get the best bang for their buck through experimentation.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Sales people have to say:

Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - The enquiries are flowing in for new seasons Hay and there is lots happening at the moment with some good quality Hay being baled. There are several parcels that have already got feed test results back, which are testing up well. Canola Hay is increasing in popularity and is sitting at around the same price as Cereals. There are some buyers already putting feelers out for Cereal Straw, so it looks like it will again be a very sought after commodity later in the season.

Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Another busy couple weeks with Hay selling into both NSW, Qld and also the Dairy areas. We are still seeing plenty of stocks selling out of the paddock. Curing and drying of Hay has been slow due to cooler conditions which has seen little Hay baled, but with the forecast of weather in the 30's this week, that might change. Pricing has been stable at the levels mentioned in previous reports and likely to hold while we wait for more Hay to be baled.

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said -
Some buyers are frustrated due to the amount of Hay under expressions of interest, they can see it but cannot access it, but that is changing. Queensland and Northern New South Wales buyers are more so buying on a need basis only; they are worried about locking in big lots due to circumstances changing.

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - We are starting to see a lot of Cereal Hay getting pressed up with some good feed test results, This could cause the price to squeeze in the coming weeks, Vetch or Protein Hay is in Demand and still commanding around the $300+ mark depending on quality. Feed tests are imperative, especially with Canola Hay. We are seeing high WSC (Water Soluble Carbohydrates) in results for most Cereals which generally make for very palatable Hay.
