Farm Tender

The Farm Tender Hay Report – She's a spot market, literally.

She's a spot market, literally.

For the fortnight up to the 19th of June, 2019 - Volume 35.

This article is bought to you by Feedworks.

What we are seeing in the Hay market right now is parcels coming up from Farmers in Victoria and SA who have had rain and are looking pretty good. So what I mean by a spot market in this instance is that once a parcel of Hay is spotted, it is usually snapped up, first in, best dressed.

Conditions in the Hay growing areas in Victoria and SA are cracking along. This is good news, and the great white hope for the industry moving forward as large areas of NSW and Qld do it tough once again.

In the last fortnight, prices have firmed once again; it's the demand from the Feedlots, they seem to be the most willing buyers and are competing with other Feedlots for each parcel.

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
Corn Straw traded for around the $170/mt mark ex Victoria and Cereal Straw prices listed $10-$20/mt to $220/mt. I see some Rice Straw trading at $140/mt ex Riverina.

Cereal Hay has gone to a new level, with parcels in the $420-$440/mt range, up $10-$20/mt in the last fortnight. A prominent Feedlot in Northern NSW paid $660/mt delivered for some top quality Wheaten Hay ex Vic/NSW border just yesterday. Canola Hay traded just over the $400/mt mark in the last fortnight up $5-$10/mt in this period.

Vetch and Lucerne Hay all has a 5 in front of the price, Vetch trading at the early $500/mt mark and Lucerne the mid $500/mt range. This is a lift in price of around $20/mt for Vetch, while Lucerne Hay prices stayed around the same as the previous fortnight

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Hay demand lifting again with colder weather coming in. Cereal Hay, Protein Hay and Straw being highly sort after but again with lack of stock listed mean it has been a struggle for many to get what they want to get them through the next 6-8 weeks. Pricing has again lifted due to the supply and demand issue. Smaller parcels are being listed due to rainfall in central and southern Victoria with the likely hood of them growing more feed this season. If you are chasing Hay or Straw, keep an eye out daily as listings of these are being snapped up quickly.

Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - There's been a bit of activity on the usually less popular feeds such as Corn Straw, Canola Silage etc. as supply remains tight on all types of Hay. Buyers are quick to secure the odd parcel of Hay that is popping up, and it is usually first in best dressed

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - Seeing the possibility of the first load of Cane Trash heading South for a test trial into a feedlot on Darling Downs. Plenty of inquiry from the northern tablelands, NSW, area who are desperate for Straw. Prices for quality Hay is only heading in one direction. Lower bale weights are a real issue when sending Hay big distances; this needs to be one of the high priorities come baling time.

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - The Supply of Hay has all but dried up, with only a few spot loads still on the books. Rice Straw has been moving in decent sized parcels due to the lack of other options. We are still getting high demand for all Cereals and Corn Stubble. So if you are sitting on a parcel, please give us a call and get it on the market and into some hungry mouths
