Decision time is here.
We have been hearing from many of our members that the decision to cut Crops or take them through to Grain was upon them. Well, plenty have made that decision with Crops being cut, left, right and centre. This "might" mean there could be quite a bit of Hay around, even though yields will be well down.
There has been alot of action on the Hay Making Equipment front, with Balers, Super Conditioners, Mower Conditioners, Windrowers and Rakes in demand
The Oil Seed Harvest will be dealt a blow with many Canola Crops being felled. Wheat and Barley Crops will follow
Many Farmers in the Wimmera, where Crops have looked ok are doing the Brix test to determine whether Crops are still growing or not. Unfortunately, the tests aren't coming back real positive and with a day like today (Tuesday the 11th) things are deteriorating quickly. One Farmer said on Twitter "Not a great day to be a Mallee Farmer."
As for prices, we are being on the conservative side as nobody really knows how much Hay is going to be out there. We do understand that yields will be reduced for those that have Crops to cut and they will want to reap the maximum amount for what they get. But putting "out there" prices on Hay doesn't sit well with many of our buying customers. A fair price today is well above where the market has been at any time in 2018
We have decided to pull our table of prices until the new season gets well underway, the reason being is that it doesn't reflect where the market is at currently
The next report will be in two weeks time.
