The Farm Tender Hay Report – Will rain change the game?

Will rain change the game?

For the fortnight up to the 8th of April, 2019 - Volume 32.

This article is bought to you by C Pearce Contracting

Since our last report a fortnight ago some of the rain gaps got filled in, on the flip side, many didn't. The rain in parts of Tassie, Victoria, SA and NSW has had little effect in the short term Hay markets as we all know it doesn't rain grass. But whatever rain we do get helps the situation we are in now for two reasons. One, rain leads to grass eventually and two, if there is grass around more Hay might enter into the low supply market, we are currently experiencing.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:
Shane Ruyg - Vic Mallee based
Shane said - Another hectic couple of weeks with Hay and Straw enquires. A lot of the enquires were for the same parcels, as the stock is dwindling down to very little that is actually available. Buyers are starting to realise the enormity of it as we are not even into winter yet. So to go into winter without much Hay available is going to test many.

it was great to see some rainfall in parts of SA/TasVIC/NSW last week.  But with the colder weather, the chances of enough feed out in the paddock is low, so the feed demands will still be there for months to come. Other forms of feed like Straw, Almond Hulls, Feed Lentils, etc are also being looked at so get in quick before its all gone!!

Bonnie Kenner - North East Vic based
Bonnie said - With Hay supplies dwindling, enquiries on straw and other alternative feeds are picking up as buyers look to secure feed for the winter months. The Hay that is appearing on the market is getting a huge amount of enquiry and is selling extremely quickly. Provided there is some follow up after the rainfall that occurred last week there is some hope that a bit more Hay may be released into the market over the coming months and will ease the pressure slightly.

Mike Pickard - Southern Queensland based
Mike said - Demand for Hay is still high in Southern Qld and Northern NSW. There was some rain around in these areas, but still, plenty have missed out. With the onset of cooler conditions, demand for Hay will still be high in the Winter.

Current pricing for Hay plus the freight puts it out of reach for most. We have some alternatives available, like Forage Sugar Cane, Cane Billets and Palm Kernel.

Paul Grayling - Northern Vic based
Paul said - We are finding the job very tough ATM with not a heap of Hay lying around, and what is around is getting snapped up at a rate of knots. There are still some parcels of Vetch Hay on the site, Straw is starting to disappear with a slight price lift being noticeable as we get close to the end of supply of that as well. We are seeing Corn Stubble and even Rice Straw being looked at.

A holistic view on all Feed sources needs to be taken to maximise the "Bang for your Buck" as we start to move into the "whatever you can get" stages of feeding..

Here are some of the quotes from the last fortnight of sales:
Staw was the big mover in the last fortnight as far as price was concerned with values lifting $10-20/mt. Good quality Straw with decent bale weights can now demand above the $150/mt mark.

Cereal Hay and Canola Hay changed little and traded anywhere up to $385/mt. There is some real resistance happening at these current levels with buyers pulling up at the current level.

Similar with Protein Hay, buyers are still buying but they will draw the line at any rises on current prices. Good Vetch and Lucerne Hay is demanding up to $450/mt
