The rise of the Farm Consultant - In business outside Farming, the Consultant is king. Nearly every industry readily uses consultants for one purpose or another. I know we have used them in our DelayPay business to find our funding partner. Boy, that was an experience.... Consultants aren't as prevalent in Agriculture, but they do exist, and many people swear by them. It's sort of like an industry that has been created over time, and I'm saying that respectfully.

I was listening to the "Boots On Log off" podcast this morning, and they had Farm Consultant Eric Nankivell on as a guest. Eric has a business called Farmanco. Take a listen to the podcast here.

According to Eric, the Farm Consultant is an Australian thing, and the model can't be found in other Agriculture countries around the world. WA is the home of the Farm Consultant, with most Farmers using one. The concept is strong in SA but relatively new to the Eastern states.

According to Eric, a Farm consultant is like a coach for your business; they instil discipline and systems. They usually have a wide range of services attached like Agronomy, Marketing, Bookkeeping and Grain Marketing, etc. In many cases, they are one-stop shops where you might deal with a different person for each service. They would also act as a conduit between the Farmer and their lending institution. As Farmers get bigger and the relationships with their banks become less, I think that the Farm Consultants will become more popular. Do you use a Farm Consultant, or are you looking to use one?
