A second consecutive week of increased wool values resulted in all Merino micron categories making further gains this week, as the Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) improved a healthy 16 cents to finish at 1566 cents per kilogram clean.
With the Australian dollar trading steady at 78.19 US cents, the increases were mainly contained to the finer micron ranges, with the 16.5-19.5 micron range lifting by 23-50 cents clean.
While the 20-23 micron range also made ground, the increases were not as significant with rises of 2–13 cents clean.
A selection of better style wools expressing good strength assisted the trade demand, helping offset some of the poorer style types.
Merino skirtings followed a similar trend to the fleece categories, with the 19.5 and finer micron ranges in solid demand increasing up to 25 cents clean for the week.
The crossbred wools were once again out of favour as poorly prepared lots were heavily discounted, resulting in the 26-30 micron range easing 30-35 cents clean, with the 32 and broader micron range marginally in the seller’s favour.
The carding sector continued to strengthen with locks, crutchings and stains all increasing by 10-25 cents clean, with the Merino carding indicator lifting 26 cents for the week.
Next week’s national sale offering increases to 46,512 bales, of which over 53 per cent will be on offer from the Melbourne selling centre.
